For years, Wiseman Helton of Mโbwatamoto Village, Traditional Authority Mโbwatalika, practiced subsistence farming but his harvests barely sustained his family. Planning for the future often seemed impossible for him as each season brought uncertainty, with little hope of transforming his farm into a reliable source of income.
Over the years, Helton was still determined, expanding 18 acres of Irish potatoes to 25 acres, even without fertilizer or other essential inputs.
โI planted my potatoes with nothing but hope,โ he recalls, reflecting on the resilience that kept him going through years of hardship.
Everything began to change when Helton received a micro-irrigation loan from the National Economic Empowerment Fund (NEEF). Through this loan, he received 50 bags of fertilizer, 250 kgs each of maize and beans, and a solar pump system for irrigation.
These inputs have significantly improved his crop growth, leading to a promising bumper harvest. โReceiving these inputs from NEEF gave me hope and the chance to finally see a successful harvest,โ he said.
He expects to harvest his Irish potatoes by September, projecting at least 600 bags weighing 50kgs. Based on current market prices, this could earn him over MK60 million, a life-changing sum he has never achieved before. The maize and beans will also complement his potatoes, further improving his income potential.
With the assistance from NEEF, Helton, a farmer who once struggled to survive is now on the path to prosperity. NEEF loans are also accessible to any eligible farmer who is willing to move and scale up their agriculture yields and income.
